A paper cut of two dragons

After their trip to China, our son and daughter-in-law brought us this cut-paper representation of marriage. The twin characters, each representing happiness, are sometimes referred to as “double happiness.” The phoenix portrays feminine grace; the dragon portrays masculine strength.

The Ugandan artist who made this batik told us it represented the ideal marriage:
husband and wife united in Christ.

After we interpreted at the Papyrus Institute in Cairo, we were given
this picture of King Tut’s royal marriage.
When we worked at a Deaf school in Mexico, we came home with this portrayal of a wedding celebration.

These works of art remind us that our marriage is also a picture—a picture of Christ and the church:

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any
such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish . . . . This mystery is profound,
and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:25-27, 32

Revelation 19 reminds us that there will be a day when earthly images of marriage will vanish in a total eclipse of the Son:

Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many
waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,

“Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God
the Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and exult
and give him the glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his Bride has made herself ready;
it was granted her to clothe herself
with fine linen, bright and pure”—

for the linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.

And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the
marriage supper of the Lamb.

Then, we will not have merely double happiness; we will have eternal happiness. Hallelujah!
